Join Us On

Great Dayton Flood March 1913
We are approaching the 100th anniversary of one of the most defining chapters in Dayton's history, the famous flood of 1913. HBA wants to help the children of Dayton understand how this event contributed to the character of the city's community as united, persevering and inspired. Our literary division, Children's Historical Publishing, is preparing the learning-activity book, "Water, Water, Everywhere," in tribute to the 100th anniversary. Please join us in achieving our goal of printing 10,000 books to distribute to the schools in five of the counties where the flood took place.
During March of 1913, over nine inches of rain fell on the land of the Miami Valley, already saturated with melted snow and previous rainfall.
On March 25, 1913, after four days of rain, the river finally overflowed the protecting levees. With ever increasing speed, the freezing waters of the Great Miami River began filling the streets of cities from Piqua to Hamilton, rising to 12 feet deep and more. Soon, the murky river water was traveling at 25 miles per hour, carrying with it everything in its path.
It took three days for the waters to recede and years for the Miami Valley to completely recover.
In the days that followed, the citizens and businesses of Dayton took on the task of raising $2 million dollars for the best engineers to design a plan to prevent future floods. After the construction of five dams and 55 miles of levee and the creation of the Miami Conservancy, the city has benefited ever since from that generation's generosity. Join us in acting with the same appreciation for the city we call home.
Our learning-activity book series and teacher guides have been endorsed by teachers statewide and approved by the Ohio Board of Education. Through donors like you, we have provided more than 350,000 books to students. Please contribute to our goal of delivering 10,000 books to students with your corporate donation of $500 per page.
In gratitude for your organization's donation, we will:
* Prominently add your organization's name and/or logo to our list of sponsors in the book
* Arrange for press opportunities with local school's and media outlets
* Place the book with your organization's name in schools, museums, bookstores and homes throughout the five counties

Home Based Arts USA began in
1994 with the mission of creating education programs and products to
enrich the lives of children, especially minority and at-risk youth. The
focus of the organization has always been to increase children's
investment in their community by making them aware of the rich and
valuable history of Dayton and the Miami Valley. The work of HBA can be
seen in such places as your local bookstore to museums nationwide. The
President of the United States and dignitaries from around the world
have witnessed our achievements.
Our current programs are the
development of Learning Activity Books and music that are of historical
and cultural in nature to serve as both a learning tool and to help
bridge the gap in social issues.
